Frenchay BIRU Speech and Language Therapists present at virtual International Conference

Posted / 17 May 2021

Two of our wonderful Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) at Frenchay BIRU recently presented at an international conference – the Cognitive Communication Disorder (CCD) Symposium, which was live streamed around the world! Their presentation invited some brilliant international discussion regarding the role of SLTs in supporting people with Cognitive Communication Disorder (CCD) to manage their social media. CCD can be described as: changes to an individual’s communication style as a result of changes to their cognition and thinking skills. It can often impact a person’s ability to problem solve, make informed, weighed-up decisions and monitor their own responses, which can understandably impact their safety online. Suzie and Kelly presented an absolutely packed presentation, outlining a particular case study of a young man and how they assessed and then managed the safety concerns flagged by his social media use.

They have since been invited to contribute to an expert advisory group for developing social media assessment and intervention resources in the future, as well as being contacted by other services to share best practice. Suzie has even been followed on Twitter by one of the keynote speakers!

We are so proud of their achievement at the conference, but also more locally, with how they have helped and continue to provide excellent SLT support to our patients with brain injuries who requiring support and education around social media use.  Suzie has also started developing an MDT social media pathway to help the MDT support other patients in the future – watch this space!
